The Story of a Struggling Mother and Son
Suraiya Khatun is a mother. She is from Shibpur in Bakharnagar union of Raipura upazila of Narsingdi. She has been blind since birth. She grew up with this blindness. Suraiya Khatun was once married. After marriage, she became the mother of 5 children at one time. But fate is very cruel. 3 out of 5 children were blind by birth. Among them there were 2 girls and 1 boy. Suraiya Khatun is not the kind of person to give up if fate repeatedly befell her. She dreams that her children will grow up properly one day. With this dream she continued to make her children established. But in the meantime her husband died. She was all alone with her 5 children. But she did not give up. Sometimes she worked as a maid in someone else’s house, sometimes she worked in a boiler to support her family properly.

Meanwhile, her visually impaired son Farooq Mia concentrated on his studies to alleviate his mother’s suffering, fulfill his dreams and got a chance at Dhaka University through his hard work. Mother Suraiya Khatun was very happy. She taught her son with great difficulty. Farooq Mia graduated from Dhaka University with many dreams. But fate betrayed once again. Farooq Mia is not getting any job due to his disability and became unemployed graduate. Meanwhile, the mother is getting old. In this way the whole family was spending their days in despair and hardship.

After getting the news of this family, Syeda Munira Islam rushed to Shibpur of Raipura upazila of Narsingdi with Inspiration Welfare Society and saw the sad state of the family. She talked to Suraiya Begum, her visually impaired son Farooq Mia and two daughters. She listened to the story of their struggling life. Suraiya Begum is just amazing. Even with her disability, the way she holds the helm of the whole family with a strong hand and the way she treated her disabled boy, was real women empowerment. Inspiration Welfare Society then spoke to the local administration and they expressed their interest in helping Suraiya Begum with a house to live in. At the same time Inspiration Welfare Society also tried to help Suraiya Begum by giving ducks and goats which they can use to become financially independent and some cash.
There are many more Suraiya Begum and Farooq Mia in our country who are constantly fighting with life and trying to do something. All they need is help and a handful of love. And the real peace is in extending this hand towards the struggling people like Suraiya Begum and Farooq Miah. And that’s what the Inspiration Welfare Society is working on.
